[SNW] Season 2, Episode 9: Subspace Rhapsody
Rating: 2 (watch for continuity)
Deadly theater geek x sci-fi nerd combo isn’t as horrific as it could be, but also is pretty boring. I don’t want to hold the episode to too high a standard since it seems nearly impossible to put together a musical episode on a TV show schedule, but it does seem like they still fell short on delivering on the premise. The songs were almost all kinda adult contemporary ballads, there needed to be way more stylistic variety. There’s basically no choreography. I want to see the crew pressing sparkling buttons in time to the song and popping in and out of Jeffries tubes! The lyrics were very character focused, but usually lacked a strong conceptual framework. (except maybe Spock’s X song) A lot of the lyrics are essentially badly written monologues plainly summarizing the feelings of character, just animated by music.
There are a number of significant and well done character moments, though. Among other factors, Chapel learning that she and Spock won’t really be a significant item in the future (according to intel from Boimler Those Old Scientists) leads her to break things off with Spock. Una is dedicated to being closer with her crew, Pike is working on his commitment issues, and La’an opens up to this universe’s Kirk about what happened with the other Kirk. Big stuff! Just not so much good catchy songs.
