[TNG] Birthright Pt. II

[TNG] Season 6, Episode 17: The Birthright, Part 2

Rating: 2

The basic pieces of an interesting, nuanced story featuring Worf are all in place here, but then the episode relies on some lazily executed and familiar tropes. Worf’s influence on the younger prisoners and the tension that causes with their parents doesn’t crescendo enough. Worf’s hatred of Romulans goes curiously unexamined. In general the whole episode just feels out of focus on every level.

Notes:

Klingons here can’t return home because it would be a dishonor to their families.
They focus their warrior instincts on gardening.
The Romulans and Klingons live in peace here. They have overcome bigotry!
So Worf tries to get out of there.
He mesmerizes the whole village with his cool moves.
He becomes friendly with a lady but then he realizes she’s half Romulan. Gross!
They rig up some whack garden hoop game.
Worf takes a boy on a hunt, to try to teach him about being a real Klingon.
He instantly converts 100%.
All the Klingons join in for a song.
The Romulan can’t have Worf spreading his influence! He orders him to death!
But Worf explains that peace is nice and all, but is it really worth it if it means you can’t do Klingon yoga, or learn how to throw a spear through hoops and all that good Klingon stuff?
So then the boy stands next to Worf.
Then other people stand next to Worf too!
So they go back to Enterprise and pretend like their parents don’t exist.
