[VOY] Season 4, Episode 8: Year of HellRating: 4
This episode mostly works as an issue of “What If?” but for Voyager. The set-up is pretty clever: A ship with time-travel ability is continually changing the timeline to try and achieve a desired outcome. That’ll be explored more in the second part, this episode is mostly devoted to how the crew would deal with a much tougher journey than they’ve experienced in the show proper.

Notes:
There’s a ship that’s constantly trying to change history to get a specific outcome. That’s a pretty cool idea.
Seven and Kim finish the new astrometrics room. Now Seven has a place to stand.
I think there’s different hair on Janeway
They come to an area of space with some nice aliens who defeated jerk aliens. The jerk aliens don’t want anyone to go through their space, but they aren’t powerful enough to stop Voyager
But then the timeline changes and the jerk aliens become really powerful, and the nice aliens are totally gone!!
Things start to look pretty grim. Of course when bad things happen in a story involving time travel, no one really believes it will stick. Stakes are low, friends.
But instead of endlessly trying to convince us of the stakes they at least use the opportunity to tell us something about the characters and how they would react in this type of situation. We find out that Kim knows a lot about sports!
I like that Seven and Tuvok start to really work well together.
Chakotay replicates a neat watch for Janeway’s birthday, so Janeway orders it to be destroyed. It’s pretty cool.
Tuvok covers Seven from an explosion and ends up losing his sight.
But he still makes himself useful. Tuvok is cool!
The time ship makes another big change. They eliminate another species from existence.
But Seven just rigged Voyager with temporal shields (ok, well fine) and Voyager isn’t affected. The jerk aliens go back to being weak somehow.
The time shift was thrown off by the temporal shields on Voyager.
The time ship finds Voyager and tells them that regretfully they’re gonna have to blow them up.
But Voyager escapes. Janeway gives the order for the crew to split up and meet on the other side of these alien’s space, in order to increase to chance of survival.
