[DS9] Season 4, Episode 3: The Visitor
Rating: 4
For a while I didn’t really like this episode. I didn’t have the patience for it after all the excitement that was built up in the last episode (and I still don’t like the placement of this episode). I also didn’t really like having to watch a whole episode of people grieving when you know it will be reversed. But the episode really isn’t about the stakes, or even the good performances. It’s about letting go of someone. It’s always really cool when science fiction can capture a theme like this in a way that isn’t possible in other genres.

Notes:
Jake is old and he starts to tell a lady why he stopped writing. He says it all started back when his father died…
The Defiant was observing something that the wormhole does every 50 years, but something goes wrong with the ship
Sisko gets hit with a warp core discharge which pulls him into subspace. Everyone thinks he’s dead
But then Ben appears a few times. Jake has to go through losing him again
After a while the Klingons take control of DS9 and Jake has to leave
Jake writes two successful books, and gets married
But another visit from his father gets him obsessed with trying to get him back
He goes back to school studying the subject and loses his wife
50 years after the incident, the wormhole is going to do that thing again, and Jake thinks he figured out a way to save Sisko
Jake gets pulled into subspace for a few minutes with Ben. Ben isn’t too happy that Jake has thrown his life away to try to get him back
But Jake eventually figured out what to do. He gives some analogies about how he and his father are connected like an elastic band, or Jake being like an anchor or something…basically the rules are that if Jake dies while Sisko is in normal space, then he’ll be sent back to when the incident first happened
