[VOY] Season 3, Episode 21: Before and After
Rating: 3
At times this episode can be a little tedious, where it seems like it’s just Kes explaining what’s happening over and over again, but there are things I liked about this episode too. There’s some great foreshadowing in “Before and After”, even if Year of Hell ended up being basically pointless. It’s also nice to get a solid Kes episode where she wasn’t just a satellite of a Neelix story.

Notes:
Kes wakes up and she’s old! And the Doctor has hair! She has a grandchild that made her a present!
Chakotay is the captain!
Kes gets cold and then wakes up in her quarters. Her grandson isn’t done with the gift yet. She’s jumped backwards in time
She finds out she’s dying, and worse, that’s she’s married to Paris.
Kim is their son-in-law. Weird
She jumps back in time again. Neelix is a security officer. I guess he continues his quest to find new things to be mediocre at.
Paris tells her about the “Year of Hell” and how he loved B’Elanna before she died.
The crew was affected by chroniton radiation during the “Year of Hell” and the Doctor’s method of extending Kes’s life reactivated some of the particles. They need a number from one of the torpedoes from the Year of Hell.
They thought they found a way to keep her from jumping back in time, but it doesn’t work.
She jumps back to when she was giving birth. Ocampa give birth out of their backs? So they’re hunchbacks during their pregnancy?
She jumps back to when the Year of Hell first started
She gets that number she needed!
Things are looking promising, but there’s still too much time left in the episode.
So she keeps going back in time
She goes way back
But the writers were just faking us out. They fixed her. And right in the time period where we left off in the previous episodes. What luck!
