[VOY] Season 3, Episode 5: False Profits
Rating: 2
Voyager is met with yet another chance to get home and more stuff from the Alpha Quadrant that has, against all odds, not only been thrown into the Delta Quadrant but also within the path of the crew. People are more accepting of the premise behind this episode because it directly references an incident in TNG, which we think is a pretty minor achievement. It’s mostly an episode just for laughs, and we didn’t think it was that funny.

Notes:
Voyager encounters the Ferengi from an episode of TNG, “The Price”. They convince a “bronze age” society that they’re gods
Janeway decides to stop the Ferengi from interfering with this planet.
They beam the Ferengi aboard and the Ferengi convince Janeway that if they’re removed, it would cause the society to become sad, or go into chaos or something.
So instead, Janeway sends Neelix down dressed as a Ferengi. He says the Grand Negus wants them to leave
When they try to kill Neelix, he admits that he isn’t Ferengi
They find out that the “song of the sages” ends with one sage coming and taking the other two back to where they came from. What luck!
So Voyager plays along with the song of the sages, and even gives the illusion of three new stars, like what are mentioned in the song. It’s a little weird watching this episode after just watching “Who Watches the Watchers” from TNG
There’s also something in the song about them returning with wings of fire. Nothing like empty suspense to fill some more time
And the last five minutes is just going through a situation where the Ferengi return to the Alpha Quadrant, and Voyager doesn’t quite get to the warm whole in time. Awww
I think it’s worthy of note that Voyager basically leaves this planet in really bad shape. Voyager performs more “miracles” for these people, and solidify their belief in “the song of the sages”. Although the Ferengi are no longer profiting from this planet, their influence will probably remain for hundreds or thousands of years. Whatever, I guess the point of the episode was to be funny, and it probably shouldn’t be taken too seriously.
