[VOY] Season 3, Episode 1: Basics, Part 2
Rating: 4
Normally the second part of a two-parter faces the challenge of resolving the conflicts raised in the first part, making it predictable. Basics Part II doesn’t fight this, but at least makes it fun to watch and does their best to make it all seem plausible. The real highlight and emotional core to the episode, and the reason it gets a 4, is Suder. Brad Dourif turns in a fantastic performance, and even though the viewer can guess the trajectory of the character, it remains emotionally resonant.

Notes:

The crew splits up into teams. I wouldn’t want Neelix as my team leader. He asks Hogan to collect bones that they find outside of a cave. Hogan looks really scared and Neelix asks “Is there a problem?” Neelix walks away and Hogan gets eaten

Seska finds out the baby isn’t Chakotay’s. I guess we’re not supposed to care what happens to him anymore.

The Voyager crew doesn’t start off on the right foot with their neighbors. The neighbors steal Neelix and Kes and then Tuvok shoots one of them using a bow he made
