[DS9] Season 3, Episode 1: The Search Part 1
Rating: 4
This episode earns a 4 primarily because it doubles down on the introduction to the Dominion from “Jem’Hadar”. It’s a little surprising how much shows up in this episode- the first appearance of The Defiant, Eddington, and the Changelings. Odo has some worrying developments, but mostly because we know it leads to some aggravating character changes that Odo never really recovers from. For the most part this episode keeps the excitement going from the end of the last season.

Notes:
Something’s happened to Dax’s hair
Sisko brings a new ship, the Defiant, to the station to fight the dominion! They’re going on a mission to make contact with the founders
Romulan-Seska and Eddington!
Odo resigns, kind of like he did last time Starfleet wanted him to work with a Starfleet security guy
Kira tries to make Odo feel better by pulling some strings to have Odo go on the mission to the Gamma quadrant. It just makes him angry
Quark gets to come on the mission too, because he’s the only one that has some contacts in the Gamma quadrant. I kept waiting to see the real reason the writers wanted his character to go, but he basically just helps with the contacts
At first I thought I might be imagining that Odo was grouchier, but now he’s actually growling at Quark. He’s definitely a lot grouchier
Quark talks to his weirdo contact
O’Brien and Dax were investigating something and they lose contact with them. After some Jem’Hadar come close to the Defiant, Sisko has to leave them behind
Odo has become fixated by a nebula in the Gamma quadrant. He wants to go see it now and forget about all the important stuff going on
There’s a huge Jem’Hadar attack! So intense that it was hard to capture clear images!
Odo rescued Kira and escaped in a shuttle. He left everyone else behind and went to see his stupid nebula instead
He finds his people. They have the same basic facial features and hair as Odo. I thought Odo looked like that because he wasn’t great at mimicking people. Maybe they’re just trying to make him feel like he’s part of the gang, although they didn’t do that with their clothes. And also later we’ll see them look like that even when Odo’s not around. Maybe they’re always mocking him
