[TOS] Season 2, Episode 23 (Netflix: S2 E23): The Omega Glory
Rating: 2
Omega Glory is pretty great for the first half of the episode. In a premise that would later be used for Insurrection, a rogue starfleet officer interferes with the people of an alien planet in an effort to take advantage of the life lengthening properties of the world. This time it’s the captain of another ship who was stranded on the planet. He goes from a more understandable position in defiance of the Prime Directive to an outright crazy villain way too quickly, and the episode takes a pretty crazy and unfortunate turn around the same time. Probably the only time you’ll get to hear the Star Spangled Banner worked into the score of an episode of Trek though…

Notes:
The Enterprise comes across another Constitution class ship, but no one is home.
They left all their laundry on the floor, with detergent still on it.
They beam down to the planet. There’s a war going on and the captain of the other ship is fighting with one of the sides!
He says people live really long lives on this planet, and don’t get diseases. He’s fighting with one side until he can figure out the mysteries of the planet, so they can be used to advance humanity. This is an interesting situation, and the episode should just be about this.
He locks Kirk up with two of the “Yangs,” who are all violent.
Kirk says “freedom” which is one of their “worship” terms.
You can just rip the bars out? What a crummy jail.
They visit the Yangs, who turn out to be big time fans of America. Turns out the YANgs are descended from YANkees get it. This is the episode of Trek that V’Ger watched I guess.
They need to find out who is evil so there’s a fight to the death. They think good always beats evil?
Spock does a thing where he telepathically implants a suggestion.
Then Kirk teaches them how to interpret the constitution correctly. Well, he basically just teaches them how to read.
