[VOY] Season 2, Episode 18 (Netflix: S2 E18): Death Wish

Initially I didn’t really like this episode because I just saw it as a sloppy analogy to the issue of assisted suicide (making it so someone should be allowed to kill themselves rather than suffer for ALL ETERNITY makes the issue a lot simpler). Then I started to think that it was much more about exploring the Q, and I didn’t really like that either. I thought they should be left ambiguous. But the more I think about it, the more I think they did a decent job. Explaining things about the Q is risky, but it works for the most part.

They find a Q trapped in a comet
He wants to kill himself but instead he accidentally makes all the guys disappear
He says he needs a Q that “has more recent experience with humans.” …yeah, more like “fans want to see John De Lancie on the show”
They are taken back in time and witness the big bang. Thought it would be cooler
After getting through the typical “Q making fun of the crew” part of the episode they begin to discuss the topic at hand: should a Q be allowed to commit suicide
Q brings in some witnesses. They’re people that the suicidal Q has interfered with. Check out these dorks
Q says that if Janeway rules in favor of the continuum, they’ll take them back to earth. It’s another example of the writers trying to raise the stakes, but they actually lower them. Now we know which way she will rule, because we know they’re not going back to earth
They visit the Q continuum to see how boring it is
They end up ruling in favor of letting the Q kill himself.
