[TOS] Season 2, Episode 5 (Netflix: S2 E5): The Apple
There’s a lot about this episode that seems very classic to what TOS becomes. Kirk goes down to a paradise planet to find out it’s not so great, teaches aliens about love and freedom, all while battling an evil super computer. It actually moves a bit slow for me though. The die hard fans of TOS probably think you can’t miss this one, but I don’t think it’s for everyone.

Notes:

They beam down to another planet that seems like a paradise, but it isn’t long before red shirts start getting shot and killed by flowers.

Chekov has a lady friend in this episode. We get to hear all of Chekov’s not-so-great romantic lines

Then he takes them to see their giant robot cave thing that takes care of them and makes them live for a really long time

They meet the rest of the tribe. They had never heard of children, or love, or radiohead. These things aren’t necessary on this world

Spock mentions the “non-interference directive” which is the prime directive I guess. Pretty much everything they’ve done so far would’ve been against the prime directive as defined by the later shows

Their robot leader, Vaal, decides Kirk and the rest need to be killed so he sends this crack team of dudes. Couldn’t Vaal have killed them with the lightning or something instead of asking these idiots to do it?

They had never heard of the word “kill.” This mission doesn’t seem like it’s going to go very well. Good thing they do combat training against some fruit

Yeah, it didn’t go well for the aliens. Slowly marching towards someone with a stick over your head isn’t a great fighting style.

Kirk finds out that Enterprise is going to be destroyed along with all of the crew, and the last thing he says to Scotty is “You’re fired”. Not a great way to say goodbye to a friend that’s about to die.
