[ENT] Season 2, Episode 3 (Netflix: S2 E3): Minefield
Rating: 2
Another episode featuring someone getting stuck with Reed. It mostly is about character development for Reed, some of which is interesting, some is annoying. This episode should be watched because it leads up to the next episode, which we really like. Also, Romulans!

Notes:
Archer summons Reed to have breakfast with him, but they don’t have anything to talk about because Reed doesn’t like sports
Explosion!
A mine is stuck to the hull and needs to be defused
Romulans show up! They want Enterprise to get lost
Reed gets himself stuck
Archer comes out to help
Hoshi listens to what the Romulans said and can understand it.
T’Pol had heard of the Romulans. How come Spock hadn’t?
This episode has a lot of Archer and Reed chatting it up. Conversation topic 1: their different views of command. I thought this was interesting but I wish Reed would’ve given more defense for strict leadership. Archer takes a similar line of reasoning as Janeway: that since they’re going to be out in space for a while, they should all become friends.
Conversation topic 2: Reed’s great uncle. Archer asks why Reed didn’t join the Navy like everyone else in his family. Reed says he’s afraid of drowning. He said his great uncle was afraid of drowning but faced his fears and became an engineer on a sub. The uncle ended up drowning to save the crew. He is Reed’s hero. I thought the part about his great uncle was interesting.
Then Reed has to go to the bathroom
Conversation topic 3: Reed sacrificing himself. Reed’s annoying defeatism returns, only this time it has a layer of “I’m ready to be a hero” on top, which makes it even more annoying. This makes some sense given the story but it isn’t presented well. Reed is too pushy about dying and “there being no other way.” It’s irritating seeing this when everyone knows he isn’t going to die.
