[TOS] Season 2, Episode 1 (Netflix: S2 E1): Amok Time

They introduce the concept of Pon Farr, which isn’t exactly our favorite part of Vulcans, although it’s best portrayed in this episode. They also establish that Vulcans are both logical, but also sort of religious, which is an interesting part of Vulcans. This episode showcases the deep friendship between Kirk, Spock and Bones.

Spock wants to go to Vulcan! “You can divert to Vulcan with a loss of but 2.8 light days.” Is that how you’re supposed to use “light days”?

But it turns out Spock will die if he doesn’t make it to Vulcan soon! Could’ve mentioned that earlier, Spock

Kirk is allowed to decline but another champion would be chosen. Kirk doesn’t think Spock can take the other guy in his condition so Kirk says he’ll fight. His plan is to just quit if it looks rough so Spock will win. Good plan Kirk. That’ll totally work out

T’Pring wanted some other guy because he wasn’t as famous as Spock, and she didn’t want to deal with all the fame or something. Pitting Spock against his best friend was the most logical way of ensuring she ends up with the other guy…I guess. She’s a jerk!

Spock tells the other guy he can have her. Spock: “You’ll find ‘wanting’ isn’t the same thing as ‘having,'” sucker.
