[TOS] Season 1, Episode 17 (Netflix: S1 E18): The Squire of Gothos
Rating: 2
–
“The Squire of Gothos” is another “
godlike entity” story that doesn’t add a whole lot to what has become a genre of Trek episodes. Part of the problem is that the plot is essentially just a series of crazy challenges that Trelane presents without much of a build up or climax. The episode does provide a few nice moments, particularly from Spock, which are noted below.

Notes:
–
Enterprise seems to have encountered some kind of super powerful jokester. Q?
Close enough
Trelane’s explanation of his matter rearranging technology is similar to the way Picard will later explain how the holodeck works.
Trelane: “Are you challenging me?” Spock: “I object to you. I object to intellect without discipline. I object to power without constructive purpose” Spock is cool in this episode
Uhura is having a good time in captivity
A duel!
They play the silliest cartoon-like noises when the machine goes haywire
Now it’s a trial. It seems like this was a big influence on Encounter at Farpoint (TNG)
Now there’s a hunt!
Aw, then Trelane’s parents show up and ruin everything
Poor Trelane
