[TNG] Season 5, Episode 18: Cause and Effect
Rating: 3
Cause and Effect is both kinda fun and kinda dull. The Groundhog Day premise works well in the context of Star Trek, but it probably should’ve been used to get more mileage out of character interactions in the middle of the story, because the repetition does get old. Because of the cool early sequences and the well done ending, we think this episode is worth checking out.

Notes:
In the opening sequence the Enterprise is destroyed!
But then everyone is playing poker, so I guess it was a minor total destruction.
Geordi got dizzy. . . . Maybe that’s what blew up the ship??
Beverly hears some voices
A ship comes out of an anomaly and is going to crash. Riker gives a really dumb suggestion of what to do, so they go with Data’s plan.
And then they blow up and die, just like before!!!
These events happen several more times, and each time it seems like the crew becomes more aware that they’ve done it before.
At least there’s spaceship crash at the end of each sequence, though.
They figure out a way that Data can send a message to himself to the next loop, but it has to be real short and sweet. Beverly is getting bored of doing the same thing over and over again.
The next loop it seems the message Data sent to himself is “3”
In the moment before they crash, Data realizes 3 signifies Riker’s pips, and that they should go with Riker’s stupid plan.
So the ships don’t crash into each other but it causes a time paradox where Frasier is the captain of a starship. So, to be continued, right??
