[TNG] Season 3, Episode 5: The Bonding
Rating: 4
This episode deals with the loss of a friend and family member in a thoughtful way. We get to see the reactions of each of the characters, all of which were very well written in this episode. We were surprised by how well done this episode was, especially the first half.

Notes:

She left behind a son, who also lost his father. Troi helps Picard prepare to talk to the boy
All of the scenes in the first half were really well done…
…Even though the young actor doesn’t do a great job
We get to see how different characters react to what happened. Data doesn’t understand, and Riker has to help him
Worf is frustrated by the death being senseless. He identifies with the boy because he was an orphan also. He wants go through a Klingon ritual called “the bonding,” where Jeremy becomes part of his house
Wesley is reminded about when his father died, and Picard had to tell him
But then his mom shows up again
She recreates his house on earth to make him feel better. Their house had kind of creepy art on the wall
Troi tries to explain why Jeremy needs to leave this fantasy. Kitty, you aren’t supposed to look at the camera
Seriously look at this art on their wall. That would freak me out as a kid
The impersonator says she’s an alien that doesn’t want anyone to suffer
Picard explains that humans need to grieve, and they won’t be satisfied by a fantasy, even if it feels good for a moment
Wesley tries to help to boy too. He said that holding in your anger and grief makes things worse
Troi convinces Jeremy to get really mad at Worf because he came back and his mother didn’t. Thanks Troi
Worf says to honor his mothers memory, not to pretend she’s still alive
Worf and Jeremy do “the bonding”. It might have been cool to have a follow up to the episode
