[TOS] Season 3, Episode 5: Is There in Truth No Beauty?

There’s a lot going on in this episode that operate under a strange set of rules. You’ll figure that out pretty fast when they explain that there’s an alien so ugly that he causes people to go insane if they look at him. Diana Muldaur is good in her role, but ultimately I think this episode is a 2.

Spock welcomes a Medusan ambassador…

…and Pulaski! She’s some kind of psychic

“The sight of a Medusan brings total madness to any person who sees one.” So the Medusan has to stay in a box

I guess this visor makes it so Spock doesn’t go crazy. Humans can’t look at the Medusan even with the visor

Spock wears an IDIC pin. I think he was trying to impress Miranda. She lived on Vulcan for a while learning how to control her abilities

“To Miranda Jones, the loveliest human ever to grace this starship”

This guy loves Miranda. Miranda doesn’t love him back

The Medusan somehow surprises him. He starts to go insane!

He goes to engineering and steers the ship into some area of space that they don’t know how to get out of

Then he dies

Kirk tries to put more moves on Miranda

Only the Medusan knows how to get out of this area of space. Miranda wants to drive the ship, and link with the Medusan’s brain to know what to do. Bones says maybe she shouldn’t do that because she’s blind

So Spock does some kind of brain link. Not really a mind meld. He becomes both people at once

There’s a part where Spock might die and maybe Miranda secretly hates him, but then he doesn’t die and she doesn’t seem to hate him. Also, there’s some interesting shots in this episode
