[TNG] Season 2, Episode 3 (Netflix: S2 E3): Elementary, Dear Data
Rating: 3
This episode sets a big stupid precedent that will echo through the rest of 90s Star Trek, but it’s still pretty fun on its own so we’re going with a 3. This is the quintessential Geordi-and Data-Palling-Around episode, which helps. It’s also nice to see Data’s limits explored a bit.

Notes:
Geordi built a model ship and took it into work with him because he isn’t a nerd at all and has lots of non-robot friends.
If you didn’t guess from the title, this episode is about Data pretending to be Sherlock Holmes.
Geordi doesn’t like playing with Data because he knows the outcome of all the Holmes mysteries.
Pulaski double-dog dares Data to try a mystery where he doesn’t know what happens.
They give it another go, but it’s just a combination of two existing Holmes mysteries. Pulaski says Data has vast knowledge but lacks the imagination and inspiration that made the Holmes character.
Geordi tells the computer to seriously make it really hard. He asks it to create an adversary that can beat Data.
Cue Moriarty.
He can call the arch!
Moriarty steals Pulaski and leaves an obvious trail for Data to follow.
Moriarty just wants to know what’s going on.
Moriarty has taken control of the holodeck!
Moriarty also drew Enterprise! He isn’t supposed to know about that!
They go and tell a grown-up.
Pulaski and Moriarty seem to get along alright.
Moriarty draws Enterprise on his chalk board and labels it figure 1. He draws no other figures.
Picard’s goin in! Worf actually isn’t going in but he just wanted to get dressed up.
It’s cool how Picard explains a holodeck. He convinces Moriarty to give back control of the holodeck. Picard promises to save his program for another episode.
