[TNG] Season 2, Episode 1 (Netflix: S2 E1): The Child
Rating: 2
This episode should be watched simply because it brings you up to speed on the changes for season two. The story wasn’t that interesting, and features Troi getting impregnated by an alien. I liked a lot of the character interactions, just not enough to bring it to a 3.

Notes:
Enterprise is picking up a new doctor!
Riker has a beard! Worf in gold! and muscle pads!
Geordi in gold too! He’s the new chief engineer! Also, it’s soo cool how Riker sits in chairs. He doesn’t have time to go around.
A light orb goes into Enterprise
Then it goes into Troi
The new doctor never reported for duty and is in Ten-forward?
Picard still doesn’t seem to like Wesley, but they explain where Beverly went. She became head of Starfleet Medical. Don’t worry, she’ll be back next season.
Guinan!
I like the introduction to Pulaski. It’s a good way of demonstrating that she doesn’t really care about protocols, just helping people. Oh wait, us trekkies are supposed to hate Pulaski. Booo Pulaski
Troi is pregnant
It’s the first encounter between Pulaski and Data. Data brings Troi into sickbay because she’s ready to give birth. Pulaski is immediately comforting to Troi and seems bothered that Data’s first response is to call security.
Pulaski: “In my other deliveries, except for a couple, the father was always present.” Data: “Perhaps I can serve in that capacity.” Pulaski: “Counselor Troi is going to need the comfort of a human touch not the cold hand of technology.” How can she say such a thing to Data! Let’s be outraged!
Turns out Pulaski was exactly right about Data being cold rather than comforting
Troi has a little baby
Troi: “Were you here all along?”
Riker: “Yes”
Man, Riker is soo cool!
Data: “My name, it is pronounced data” [day-ta]
Pulaski: “oh?”
Data: “You called me ‘data'” [da-ta]
Pulaski: “haha, what’s the difference?”
Data: “One is my name, the other is not.”
Pulaski: “Is this possible? With all your neural nets, algorithms, and heuristics is there some combination of circuits that makes up for bruised feelings?”
The writers joke about the pronunciation of the word “data”, as well as re-demonstrate that Pulaski doesn’t quite know what to think about Data. My favorite part is right after, when Picard calls him “dater”
O’Brien is back!
“My face is wet”.
He doesn’t understand crying.
They establish Guinan as a counselor-type, that she’s very old, and everyone wants to know what’s up with her. She tells Wesley to be selfish sometimes
The other plot is about transporting something really dangerous. Geordi’s first job as chief engineer was to build a containment device for it, and it’s not really working. Some other plot-line is giving off radiation that’s interfering
The child dies and turns back into a light orb. The radiation stops
Troi explains that it was an alien life form that was curious about humans(/betazoids) so he wanted to give it a shot.
Wesley asks to stay on Enterprise rather than go back with his mom
Riker has to take care of Wesley, although Worf volunteers to tuck him in (which sounds like a lame joke, but Michael Dorn delivered it in a way that was actually funny)
